Commercial Driver's License Overview

The Edward McGlone Law Office represents holders of commercial driver's licenses who are facing traffic violations in Vigo County, Clay County, and Putnam County.

Rules governing commercial driver's licenses (CDLs) in Indiana are significantly more stringent than those governing ordinary driver's licenses.  If you hold a CDL and you are accused of a traffic violation, severe penalties may apply.  For example:

  • In Indiana, if you are a CDL holder, it is illegal for you to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .04 or more grams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood or 210 liters of breath.  If you are convicted of a DUI, you may lose your license for one to three years.  After a second DUI offense, your license may be suspended for life.
  • If within a period of three years you are convicted of two major offenses while driving your commercial vehicle, such as excessive speeding, reckless driving, or any offense that causes a death, your CDL may be suspended for at least 60 days.  If you are convicted of three such major offenses within a period of three years, the suspension may last for at least 120 days.
  • If you use your commercial vehicle to commit a felony or you leave the scene of an accident that involved your commercial vehicle, your license may be suspended for one year to three years.

If you are a CDL holder and you have been arrested or issued a traffic ticket in Indiana, seek advice from an Indiana defense attorney with experience handling CDL traffic violations cases.  We can utilize many legal strategies and options to fight your case and reduce the potential penalties you face.  For example, in some cases it may be possible for a speeding ticket to be amended to a non-moving violation.  If you reside outside of Indiana, we can appear on your behalf so that you do not have to return to this state in order to go to court.  Retaining an experienced traffic violations lawyer can simplify the legal process and improve your outcome.
